some musical irritation

My friend in studio has been playing “Mumford & Sons” for the past hour and a half. Now, we all agreed that this was okay. So really, I have no right to complain. But seriously, every single (and I mean, every single) one of their songs sounds the same. Good lord. I actually thought their first album was alright. But this second one? Man, was I mistaken if I thought their band was something unique. They’re like one hit wonders—only one album wonders. It’s as if they pegged a particular style of song incredibly well and one album of that sort of song was great. America ate it up. But after that one album, all their creativity left. They aren’t even that talented of musicians. Seriously.

-chord based guitar strumming methodically

-the same pulsing drum beat

-the banjo playing one riff that alternates going a step up or a step down (sometimes it goes up and down about half a scale. wow) every time the song “picks up”

-the same predictable harmony and patterns of the voice

-a quiet, soulful beginning that builds to the banjo and drum mentioned before

-even the same key

I am seriously frustrated with this band. If you can’t make an album with some variety, please, please don’t produce it. Ugh.

Through all of this, I don’t want to put my headphones back on, though, for fear of offending her. So, I sit here. And gripe.

Also, in contrast, Lil Wayne is dying. I literally cannot name one Lil Wayne song. Literally. Honestly, I’ve always despised what he represents But it still makes me sad that a man could be so unhappy with himself that he would ravage himself with codeine as much as he has. I’m sorry for the pain.

Hamburg’da yaşayan sanatçı Şakir Gökçebağ 2012 George Maciunas Ödülü’ne layık görüldü.

1965 doğumlu Şakir Gökçebağ, kelime oyunlarıyla yaratıcılığını birleştirerek şaşırtıcı nesneler, heykeller, kolajlar ve fotoğraflar üretiyor.

Bu amaçla, günlük hayatta kullanılan, süpürge, ayakkabı, şemsiye, kevgir, kablo ve tuvalet kağıdı gibi sıradan araç gereçleri kullanan Gökçebağ, birçok Fluxus sanatçısı gibi genellikle ucuz ve basit malzemeleri tercih ediyor.

George Maciunas Ödülü, Fluxus akımının kurucusu ve destekleyicisi anısına verilmektedir. 1962 yılında, Maciunas, Wiesbaden’de ilk Fluxus manifestosunu organize etmiş, Avrupa ve New York’ta da festivaller düzenlemiştir. Bu önemli ödül, George Maciunas hayatını henüz 46 yaşındayken kaybettiği için, 1992’den beri her 46 ayda bir Wiesbaden’den koleksiyoner Ute ve Michael Berger tarafından verilmektedir. Daha önce Maria Eichhorn (Berlin), Ramouald Hazoumé (Benin), Mona Hatoum (Londra), Dan Perjovschi (Bükreş) ve sanatçı topluluğu Superflex (Kopenhag) bu ödüle layık görülmüştür. 2004’ten bu yana bu ödüle ilaveten verilen teşvik ödüllerini ise Nevin Aladağ(Berlin), Driton Hajredini (Priştine) ve 2012 yılında da Annika Kahrs (Hamburg) kazanmıştır.

Bu yılın ödül kazanan sanatçıları 7 Aralık 2012 tarihinde TANAS proje mekanında açılacak olan bir sergi ile onurlandırılacaklardır.

waiting for next year

In the rush of production week (which I barely survived) I forgot to mention a few things.

1. Next year I officially become a graduate student. Woah. Fast trackin it. It seems a bit unreal.

2. Spring semester I’ll be studying in Copenhagen, Denmark for roughly six months, as well as exploring the surrounding countries. I’d like to stay there for the summer and try to land an internship, but we’ll see what happens with that. Take things one step at a time.

3. This summer I’ll hopefully be interning in Manhattan while also taking summer shop to get it out of the way. Also, it would be fun to have free reign of the shop without everyone crowding it up. Hopefully this longboard I’m making after break will turn out nicely and then I can toy with the idea of mass producing the decks. Hmm…

4. If that fails, it’s Minneapolis here I come in pursuit of interning (see a trend?) or working with the exhibit design/production/maintenance team for the Children’s Museum. Unpaid, but still fun, I’m thinking.

Looking forward to the future, for once.

Wish You Were Here—Lee Fields and the Expressions. Saw him open up for Pretty Lights this summer and was blown away by his energy. Amazing. And such a classic sound. Give it a listen.
